Acetic acid [content >80%] is a colorless, transparent liquid with a strong pungent sour odor at room temperature. It is miscible with water, ethanol, and other solvents in any proportion, and its high-concentration aqueous solution (glacial acetic acid) solidifies into ice-like crystals at low temperatures. As a typical weak acid, its chemical properties are mainly determined by the carboxyl group: it can undergo esterification to form various esters such as ethyl acetate (an important raw material for fragrances and solvents), can neutralize bases to produce acetate salts, and can be dehydrated in the presence of a dehydrating agent to form acetic anhydride. Based on these characteristics, the primary uses of high-concentration acetic acid are as a key organic chemical raw material for synthesizing vinyl acetate (used in producing coatings, adhesives, and vinylon fibers), terephthalic acid (used in producing polyesters), as well as intermediates for pharmaceuticals and dyes; as an excellent solvent in pharmaceutical production and the dye industry; as an acidulant and preservative in the food industry; and additionally, for producing cellulose acetate and other materials.
