Sodium Metasilicate Pentahydrate (SMS·5H₂O) is a white crystalline or lumpy solid at room temperature, readily soluble in water, and its aqueous solution exhibits strong alkalinity. As an inorganic silicate, it possesses stable chemical properties along with excellent capabilities in buffering alkalinity, emulsifying and dispersing, preventing flocculation, and softening hard water. Based on these characteristics, its primary applications are as an efficient detergent builder and metal surface treatment agent, widely used in formulating industrial and household cleaners, as well as metal degreasing agents. Additionally, it serves as a clay body enhancer in the ceramics industry, a binder for refractory materials, and a setting accelerator for cement. It also plays significant roles in textile bleaching and dyeing, paper deinking, and fireproofing materials, among other fields.
