Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) is a white solid at room temperature, typically in the form of flakes, lumps, or rods. It is highly deliquescent, readily soluble in water with the release of significant heat, and its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline. As a strong base, its chemical properties are similar to those of sodium hydroxide, exhibiting extreme corrosiveness and reactivity: it can neutralize acids, react with amphoteric metals, and saponify fats and oils. The potassium salts it forms are generally more soluble in water than their corresponding sodium salts. Based on this characteristic, its primary applications include the production of liquid soaps, potassium salts (such as potassium permanganate), and alkaline battery electrolytes. It also serves as a carbon dioxide absorbent, an intermediate in dye production, and a raw material in fine chemical synthesis. Furthermore, it is commonly used as a strong alkaline reagent in pharmaceuticals and chemical analysis.
