Sodium Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate/Rongalite is a white crystalline or powdered substance at room temperature, hygroscopic and readily soluble in water. It is relatively stable under ambient conditions but chemically unstable, decomposing upon contact with acids or at temperatures above 60°C to produce toxic gases such as formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. Its core chemical characteristic is its extremely strong reducing power at elevated temperatures. Based on its potent reducing and bleaching effects, its primary applications are as a discharge agent and reducing agent in the printing and dyeing industry, and as an activator in rubber synthesis. It is crucial to note that due to the toxicity of its decomposition products, its use as a food bleaching additive is strictly prohibited by national regulations.
