Urea is an odorless white crystalline or granular substance at room temperature, readily soluble in water, with its aqueous solution being neutral. As an amide compound, its chemical properties are relatively stable, but it decomposes upon heating and can hydrolyze under the action of acids, alkalis, or the enzyme urease. Its most significant chemical reaction is the condensation polymerization with formaldehyde under heat or catalysis to produce urea-formaldehyde resin. Based on these properties, its primary application is as a highly effective nitrogen fertilizer widely used in agriculture. It is also an important chemical raw material for producing urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, and similar products. Additionally, it serves as an animal feed additive, a raw material in the pharmaceutical industry (e.g., for diuretics and sedatives), and as a component in automotive exhaust fluid (AdBlue).
