1,2-Propylene Oxide (PO) is a colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid at room temperature, with an ether-like odor. It is partially miscible with water. As the simplest epoxide compound, its three-membered ring structure makes it highly chemically reactive, readily undergoing ring-opening polymerization to produce polyether polyols and reacting with compounds containing active hydrogen (such as water, alcohols, amines, and carboxylic acids) in addition reactions. Owing to its high reactivity, its primary use is as a key organic chemical feedstock, extensively utilized in the large-scale production of polyether polyols (subsequently used to manufacture polyurethane foam), propylene glycol, nonionic surfactants, oilfield demulsifiers, as well as pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediates. It should be noted that it is classified as a toxic, flammable, and explosive hazardous chemical, requiring strict protective measures during handling.
