Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (HPC) is a white or pale yellow powder at room temperature, soluble in cold water and a variety of polar organic solvents, but insoluble in hot water. As a non-ionic cellulose ether, its unique chemical property is its thermosensitive gelling behavior: when heated to a specific temperature (approximately 40–45°C), its aqueous solution forms a gel, which reverts to a solution upon cooling—a reversible process. Additionally, it exhibits good film-forming and adhesive properties, as well as compatibility with non-ionic, anionic, and cationic substances. Based on these characteristics, the primary applications of HPC include its use as a coating material, binder, and thickener. It is widely employed in the pharmaceutical industry (e.g., tablet coating, sustained-release formulations, eye drops), the food industry (as a thickener and stabilizer), cosmetics (as a fixative), and construction materials (as a water-retaining agent in cement), among other fields.
