Hydroxymethyl Cellulose (HMC) is typically a white or pale yellow powder or granular substance at room temperature, odorless, and readily soluble in cold water to form a transparent or slightly turbid, viscous colloidal solution. As a cellulose derivative, it exhibits stable chemical properties and offers excellent thickening, suspending, binding, film-forming, and water-retention capabilities. Its colloidal solution remains stable within a pH range of 2–10, though degradation may occur in the presence of strong acids, strong alkalis, or certain oxidizing agents. Based on these characteristics, its primary applications are as a thickener, stabilizer, and binder. It is widely used in the food industry (e.g., ice cream, yogurt), pharmaceutical manufacturing (e.g., tablet binder, thickening agent for eye drops), cosmetics (e.g., toothpaste, shampoo), construction materials (e.g., water-retention agent for cement mortar), and the ceramics industry, among other fields.
