Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is typically a colorless to pale yellow clear liquid at room temperature (commonly available as a 10% aqueous solution) and is readily soluble in water and polar solvents such as ethanol. As a highly effective, broad-spectrum isothiazolinone-based biocide, the active N-S bond in its molecular structure undergoes ring-opening reactions. By interacting with sulfhydryl (-SH) group-containing proteins and DNA within microbial cells, it disrupts their structure and metabolism, thereby achieving rapid bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects. Due to its high efficacy and broad-spectrum activity, its primary applications include use as a preservative and biocide in a wide range of products. These include personal care products (such as shampoos and wet wipes), industrial applications (such as water-based coatings, metalworking fluids, and industrial cooling and circulating water systems), and adhesives, where it serves to prevent microbial and fungal growth. However, it should be noted that due to its potential for skin sensitization, its use in leave-on cosmetic products (such as face creams and lotions) has been strictly restricted or banned in many regions, including the European Union.
