Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGEE) is a colorless, transparent liquid with a mild ether-like odor at room temperature, miscible with water and most organic solvents. Its molecular structure contains both an ether bond and a hydroxyl group, providing chemical stability along with amphiphilic (hydrophilic and lipophilic) properties, and the hydroxyl group can undergo reactions such as esterification. Due to its excellent solubility and moderate volatility, it is primarily used as a solvent in coatings (e.g., nitrocellulose and epoxy paints), inks, dyes, and cleaners; in the electronics industry for cleaning printed circuit boards and semiconductor processing; and also serves as an intermediate in organic synthesis for preparing derivatives such as acetates. It should be noted that this substance exhibits reproductive toxicity and hematotoxicity, and strict protective measures should be observed during use.
